  1. Sir Garfield Sobers

West Indies cricketers were well known for their aggression and talent. Coincidentally, the first player to knock 6 sixes in an over was also a West Indies cricketer. More than just hitting six straight sixes, though, the thrilling end added to it to make it memorable. On August 31, 1968, at St Helen’s, Garfield Sobers was playing for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship when he accomplished the feat. Malcolm Nash, the unfortunate bowler for Glamorgan, was his opponent. With Nash bowling slowly and the ball turning over very little, the batsman hit every ball bowled to him. Sobers hit five straight sixes in the first five balls of the over before being caught on the boundary. However, it was discovered after careful review that Roger Davis, a fielder for Glamorgan, had dragged the ball over the rope during the hit, which resulted in 6 sixes in that over.

It took 17 years for another cricket player, none other than India’s Ravi Shastri, to match Sobers’ record of 6 sixes in a single over. Shastri, the second cricketer to join the renowned “36-run” club, achieved it on January 19, 1985, while representing Bombay (Mumbai) in the Ranji Trophy match against Baroda. Shastri had hit Baroda’s left-arm spinner, Tilak Raj, for 6 sixes in an over to make it to the history books. In 113 minutes, Shastri achieved the fastest double century in first-class cricket history and remained unbeaten at 200 runs.

  1. Herschelle Gibbs

Former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs was the first to hit 6 sixes in an over in international cricket. Known for his destructive batting style, the Proteas opener couldn’t have gotten to it on a bigger stage. South Africa was playing the Netherlands in the 2007 World Cup when Gibbs decided to take bowler Van Bunge to the stands six times in an over. Herchelle Gibbs 6 sixes entered the record books as the first batsman to have achieved the feat in a World Cup and remained the only man to have hit 6 sixes in an over in a 50-over game until 2021.

  1. Yuvraj Singh

Perhaps Herschelle Gibbs inspired Yuvraj Singh because, just months later, the Indian batsman also made it to the cricket 6 balls 6 six record list. Singh’s heroics occurred during the inaugural 2007 T20 World Cup in Durban against England, with the bowler in this case being none other than England’s premier fast bowler, Stuart Broad. There were a lot of heated arguments leading up to the event between Yuvraj Singh and Andrew Flintoff of England. Stuart Broad thought of taking full advantage of Yuvraj’s rage, but Yuvraj created a record in cricket 6 ball 6 six.

After the intense exchange with Flintoff, Yuvraj Singh seemed set to go, with India already leading by 171/3 after 18 overs. He attacked the opening ball of the 19th over for a six over mid-wicket, which was not surprising. The events of the next five balls, at least for Stuart Broad, were unexpected. The first six was followed by consecutive sixes over square-leg, long-off, deep point off a full toss and over square leg. Everyone was hoping for  6 sixes by Yuvraj, and as you would anticipate, he smashed the final ball long-on to add his name to the 6 sixes in an over record book of international cricket.

  1. Ross Whitely

Ross Whitely became the next batsman to reach this milestone in a T20 Blast match in 2014. At Headingley, Whitely, an English batsman for the Worcestershire Rapids, faced Yorkshire Vikings spinner Karl Carver and hit him for 6 sixes.

  1.  Leo Carter

Carter pulled 6 sixes in an over while playing in New Zealand’s Super Smash in 2020. Playing for Canterbury Kings, Carter hit 6 sixes against Northern Knights left-arm spinner Anton Devcich to score an astonishing 29-balls-70 as his team ran to a seven-wicket victory.

Mumbai Indians hard-hitter Kieron Pollard had brought back the festival of sixes after a lull period following the pandemic when Sri Lanka were facing the Windies in the first T20I of a three-match series. Pollard pulled it off against Sri Lanka’s Akila Dananjaya, who had interestingly also taken a hat-trick in the same match. Chasing 132 runs, the hosts won with four wickets to spare.
